Announcing the conduct of the ‘16th Asian Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS) 2024’ Chennai

Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI) is proud to support the forthcoming 16th Asian Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS), to be held in Chennai from July 25th to 27th at the Chennai Convention Centre, Nandambakkam. The Asian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons led by its President Prof. Dr. Gunaseelan Rajan, highlighted the increasing burden of Oral Cancer across South Asia and which is the second highest type of cancer In India.

Addressing the press conference were: Prof. Dr. Gunaseelan Rajan, President & Organising Chairman of Asian Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS 2024), Prof. Dr. V. B. Krishna Kumar Raja, (Chairman Scientific Committee), Prof. Dr. Jimson S (Organising Secretary) and other senior surgeons, Dr. M.
Veerabahu, Dr. N. Nanda Kumar and Dr.Elavenil.

This international conference will focus on critical topics of Facial Surgery, including Oral Cancer (mouth cancer).Renowned speakers and experts from various parts of the globe will attend, offering their insights and expertise on these crucial health issues. The Conference has attracted nearly 1,800 delegates from all over Asia. These delegates are key stakeholders in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and represent nearly 60 Universities and over 20 countries from Asia.

Experts in the field of facial surgery from across Asia are coming together at Chennai during the last week of July to discuss strategies on various pressing health issues including Oral Cancer, (Mouth Cancer) Facial injuries and road safety, birth problems like cleft lip and palate the management of sleep disorders, and dental implants for Artificial fixed teeth replacement for the whole mouth.

Early detection is key to successful treatment outcomes. The use of tobacco in various forms and pan products is the biggest risk factor. The Use of artificial intelligence (AI) for early detection of Oral cancer is an advancement
being discussed during this program. According to ICMR more than 1,20,000 cases of oral cancer were detected in India in 2020 and the biggest risk group were men over 40.

Prof. Dr. Jimson S the Organising Secretary, underlined that Managing Facial trauma following road traffic accidents is another huge problem where the maxillofacial surgeons have strongly advocated the use of seat belts
and helmets along with strict enforcement of traffic rules through awareness programs.

Over 35000 Children are born with Cleft lip and palate every year in India and similar number across Asia.Managing these children from birth till over 18 years of age requires a multidisciplinary team and specialized approach with a maxillofacial surgeon, being a key member of the team.

Sleep disorders especially obstructive sleep apnoea is another most common sleep problem. The person repeatedly stops and then starts breathing while sleeping. Snoring is one of the commonest symptoms seen.
Surgery of the jaws is a good solution for many such patients.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Gunaseelan Rajan, President & Organising Chairman of Asian Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS 2024), said “After a period of 22 years the Asian Conference comes back to India. The Organising Committee has planned an academic feast with Presidential Oration, Keynote Presentations, Panel Discussions and Plenary Sessions!
