Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital Conducts 1st National Conference on Injection Laryngoplasty and Thyroplasty 

Chennai, September 27th, 2022:  The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, hosted the First national conference on Phonosurgery, titled VOICECON 2022 in Chennai today. The one-day conference witnessed widespread and enthusiastic participation of medical experts from all over India around100 doctors and students.  It is one of the hands-on workshops for voice disorders, where both Injection Laryngoplasty and Thyroplasty are combined. 

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. W.M. S. JohnsonDean, Dr. P. Sasi Kumar, Medical Superintendent and Dr. R. Veerabahu, Adviser of Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital.

Speaking about VOICECON 2022Prof Dr. M.K.Rajasekar, Head of the Department, Department of ENT, Sree Balaji Medical College, and Hospital said, “VOICECON 2022 conference will motivate young doctors to practise the latest techniques in the field of phono surgery. Phonosurgery is the restoration of voice without disturbance of anatomical structures. It can be done for voice disorders like vocal cord paralysis, sulcus vocalis, spasmodic dysphonia, puberphonia, etc. it helps to reduce the hoarseness of voice, and certain surgeries help in converting male voice to female voice and vice versa, “added Prof. Dr. M Rajasekar.

Speaking on the Hand-on workshop on Injection Laryngoplasty and Thyroplasty, Dr Ragitha Binu Krishnan, Consultant, Department of Laryngology, KIMS Hospital, Trivandrum, said, Injection laryngoplasty is an office procedure that involves injecting a material into the vocal cord to improve the voice. It avoids hospitalisation and is cost-effective with fewer complications. Thyroplasty is the surgery done for vocal cord paralysis and puberphonia. It is a surgical procedure with good results.

The one-day conference gave an excellent opportunity for young and future generation doctors to learn the latest techniques of phono surgery from two of the best laryngologists, Prof. Dr. Satish Nair, Senior Consultant, ENT and Head and Neck Oncology Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore and Dr. Ragitha Binu Krishnan, Consultant, Department of Laryngology, KIMS Hospital, Trivandrum.
