
Chennai, April 15th, 2025: Iswarya Hospital, a super speciality hospital at OMR, Chennai. Performed a successful open-heart surgery for “Intra Cardiac Repair of Tetralogy of Fallot on one year old girl baby weighing only 6 kilograms. The baby was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare and serious condition, caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present at birth (congenital), these defects, which affect the structure of the heart, cause oxygen-depleted blood flow out of the heart and to the rest of the body. The surgery was performed by Dr.S.Muthukkumaran, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. R. S. Sandheep Senior Cardiac Anaesthetist, at Iswarya Hospital and his team, ensuring a positive outcome and giving hope to the child’s family. The Surgery lasted for 4 hours.
Baby, resident of Chennai, was delivered normally with birth weight of 3.4kg, the baby was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease in immediate post-natal period and the soon started losing her consciousness after crying a lot and developed bluish discoloration of skin, tongue and nails.Clinical examination at the hospital where the baby was born, revealed that the baby was diagnosed with CHD (congenitalheart disease) – TOF (Tetralogy of Fallot-blue baby disease) post birth and she was on regular follow up. On 31.03.2025, the baby was admitted at Iswarya Hospital in a critical condition of decreased saturation level. On 01.04.2025, doctors performed an emergency open heart surgery to fix the heart defects, improving blood flow to the lungs and ensuring oxygen-rich blood reaches the body. This typically involves patching the hole between the lower heart chambers (ventricular septal defect) and widening outflow tract to lungs. Post-surgery baby was responding well to medicalmanagement.
